Change of Heart

It’s one of these Daily Prompts that I thought would take three minutes. Pick obvious song, find lyrics, copypasta, publish.

So much for that. Playing Jim Brickman’s song “By Heart” sent me on a YouTube bender that I had to force myself to recover from because I had work to finish. So this post arrives 22 hours later, and it’s a different song with of course different lyrics.

The theme remains the same though.

Before I talk about the song, an aside about the Prompt theme. I know the words to a few poems and a LOT of songs. There was the urge to go with something profound, but that’s no fun. At least not to me anyway. Then I was going to go with the obvious (a song with the same title as the prompt) but that sent me listening to dozens of songs. I was ready to post Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors, but everyone know that song (it’s been covered to death).

So. Full circle. Back to Jim Brickman (who might not be all that familiar to people any more), and a song he recorded with one of my favorite 80s icons, Olivia Newton-John.

It’s a breakup song, being sung by the person doing the leaving. Leaving, not because there’s someone else, or out of malice, but because you know you need to be someone else and somewhere else. It’s an emotion that’s streaked with both selfishness and self-preservation. There’s a lot of guilt and a lot of recrimination. You’ve likely been caught in the circumstances for a very, very long time. Once you build up enough courage, you have to go, or you’ll never leave. If you’ve ever been in that position before, you’ll understand.

I feel that I’m at a crossroads
I don’t know which way to go
You say that I am changing
Into someone that you don’t know
Who I am and who I’ll be
Is locked inside, inside of me

And if I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend
If we break apart?
How do I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

For years you have been my best friend
I thought that would always be
You know that I just can’t pretend
It’s written all over me
‘Cuz where I’ll go
And what I’ll do, I just can’t see
My life without you

If I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend
If we break apart?
How do I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

Moving on is gonna take some time
When I’m gone, you might have
A change of mind
Gotta take the chance,
No matter what I find.

No matter how far I travel
I think of you as home
Its not about finding someone else,
Its all about being alone
Because who I am and who I’ll be
Is locked inside, inside of me
‘Cuz if I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend,
If we break apart?
How will I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

How will you take
My change of heart?

There’s nothing profound about the lyric or the melody. It feels and sounds like a conversation that the singer has just enough courage to have. Olivia Newton-John’s delivery is raw and sincere. If she hadn’t been in that place before, she at the very least understands.

  1. I didn’t know this song but I liked it, thanks for sharing it! I agree with you, the song does feel almost like a conversation but it is also a bit profound in the sense that if you have experienced anything similar whether with a lover or even a friend, it can take you elsewhere.
